Heartland AEA-World of Media-Web Sites

Here are a few web sites to note from the Heartland AEA-World of Media newsletter I receive once a month.  Please take a look at them.

Interactive Science and Math - An awesome science education web site that provides printable teacher resources, a student zone with homework helpers and video resources, online games and puzzles related to math games, word games, element games and more, and programs for teachers and education events for teachers and students.

Interactive Math - Awesome web site that provides 4 interactive games for students related STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).  The 4 games are Math by Design, Scale City, Rock-n-Roll Roadtrip, and Proportion Land.  Included with these 4 interactive games are focuses on certain standards and concepts that each game can be associated with such as with Ratios and Proportions, the game Scale City would work appropriately to introduce those concepts.  Also included are additional resources from supporting web sites such as Science NetLinks, Read, Write, Think, and PBS Teachers to support the interactive games and their standards and concepts.

Read, Write, Think - Students in the computer lab have used this web site extensively with the student interactive games related to Daily 5 activities.  But there is so much more to this web site.  This includes printable classroom resources, interactive games, professional development, and parent and after school resources.  Additional features include searching by theme, learning objective and/or grade level.  All these research based concepts focus around learning language, learning about language, and/or learning through language.

Thinkfinity Literacy Network - The web site provides ways to discover how to teach, learn, manage, and/or volunteer in relationship to literacy.  The teaching section alone provides close to 50 free online courses to better practice best literacy instruction.  Activities, visual aids, strategies, podcasts, and interactive teaching tools are provided to better help.

Advertising and Tweens - A web site that provide awesome information related to advertising and its uses and purposes.  Would be very interesting for 4th and 5th graders to explore.  Provides both an interactive online game and a web site based online game for the students.  Also provides lesson plans, teaching materials and videos related to the information presented throughout the web site.  Teaches core advertising literacy concepts and concepts related to editorial content and literature.

Heartland AEA-World of Media-Web Sites

Here are a few web sites to note from the Heartland AEA-World of Media newsletter I receive once a month.  Please take a look at them.


Dabbleboard - This web site turns the classroom whiteboard into an online interactive whiteboard.  Signing up for a free account allows you to draw and create on the interactive whiteboard, and lets you have unlimited collaborators share ideas synchronously or asynchronously or your whiteboard drawing concept.  Take the tour to see how you, your peers, and your students can interactively share resources online to better enhance your learning and teaching.


Learn 360 - This web site provides a variety of streaming or downloadable videos in relationship subject area, grade level and media format.  Recently added was 23 new math videos in relationship to 3-digit numbers, multiplying by 2, and greater and less than.  Also recently added was 369 videos in relationship to health and health education.  Use the schools AEA assigned username and password to login and have access to all of the content.  If you do not remember the schools AEA assigned username and password, please email me.


PBS: Nature -  Use these streaming or embedded videos in the classroom to learn more extensively about certain animals, ecology, habitats, and nature. There are full videos (45 mins.+), short videos (1:30 mins.+) and previews.  You if like the video you even have the option to buy it to keep.


Storybird - Have students or yourself create a collaborative story using the vibrant art and creative illustrations created by others, or yourself. From these already created storyboards, fill in your story using the art and illustrations, from a story you are creating on a whim or from a story you have written on paper and want to publish. You can create an account (to be able to save) or not create (can still do the same, but no saving).  Students can individually signup with their parent's permission or you as the teacher can create an account for the students to access, use and collaborate on their stories.


Teachers' Domain - Enhances free digital media from public TV broadcasters for educational use.  Can search for materials by state standards, Common Core State Standards, or national standards.  Can create an online profile to share resources used.  Media sources include: Between the Lions, Frontline, and Nova to name a few.

Heartland AEA-World of Media-Web Sites

Here are a few web sites to note from the Heartland AEA-World of Media newsletter I receive once a month.  Please take a look at them.

Atomic Learning - This web site provides "How to Videos" on everything for student or personal use (example: how to use Google Earth, Google Sites, Google Chrome, Google Reader, Google SketchUp, etc.)  For username and password information please email me, unless you remember the school assigned AEA username and password.

EduVision - This web site provides Technology Integration videos from local Iowa teachers, "How to Use Heartland's online database" videos, and videos on how to use a variety of web 2.0 tools.

Science Iowa Core Essential Concepts and Skills-Technology Infusion - A Heartland AEA wiki that showcases the Science Iowa Core Essential Concepts and Skills and their connections to technology infusion, video examples and supports.  Broken down by Primary and Intermediate grade levels along with the different science subjects.

Academy of Achievement - Provides pictures, facts and more related to the greatest visionaries and achievers of our time, such as: Maya Angelou, Bill Gates, Rosa Parks, Jonas Salk, and Peyton Manning to name a few.

Lit2Go - Collection of classic books, stories and poems to be downloaded for free as a Mp3 audiobook, Web page text, or PDF to print.  You can download these and play them through iTunes or synced onto 1 of our 2 iPod Nanos for students to listen to, while they follow along with the printed copy, of a classic book.

National Writing Project-Digital Is - Provides a collection of ideas, reflections and stories about what it means to teach writing in our digital age of learning.

Mathcasts - Provides the opportunity for students to learn and review math skills through the use of screencasts that combines computer screen writing with voice narration to better learn.  Great resources to send home to parents to help their children with math.
