Technology Integration. Wikipedia states that, “Technology Integration is the use of technology tools in general content areas in education in order to allow students to apply computer and technology skills to learning and problem-solving. Generally speaking, the curriculum drives the use of technology and not vice versa.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_integration
So by the above definition, is using web sites that have activities and games for student use still considered technology integration? This is always a topic for discussion that comes to mind when talking to other technology teachers and educators. What if a class comes into the computer lab, just to play math games using web sites? Is this considered technology integration?
Well let’s take a look using the Wikipedia definition.
√ The students are using the computer as a technology tool.
√ The students are applying their knowledge of their math skills and facts through the use of technology.
Ø The teachers are using their student’s curriculum, but are they using it to drive the use of technology, or is technology just being used as another means to learn the information?
I would say that using web sites is a part of technology integration as long as it has a purpose and works towards the curriculum driving the use of technology. Just don’t make web sites a dependent part of your curriculum and truly find a way for your curriculum to drive the use of technology.
Edutopia states that, “Effective technology integration is achieved when its use supports curricular goals. It must support four key components of learning: active engagement, participation in groups, frequent interaction and feedback, and connection to real-world experts.” http://www.edutopia.org/tech-integration
